Strategic Plan Update

Day 50

This week, we’re marking the mid-point in the 100 day plan that I launched on January 4th, 2010.  It’s time to take stock of what we’ve done so far and what we have left to do.  It’s also time to try out the little video camera in my laptop.  So, here’s my Day 50 report delivered “in person.”

To recap:

We can check off the first two of five priorities — the Case for Change and the YMCA CEO Forum.  We’re now looking forward to delivering on the last three — our milestones, a major course correction, and the process to create new strategic plan.

Between now and the Annual General Meeting of the National Council of YMCAs in May 2010, we’re –

  • developing tools to support discussion about the Case for Change at Association board tables
  • creating a map to guide you through the key milestones leading to a new strategic plan starting in 2012
  • preparing for the dialogue at the May meeting on the major course correction to YMCA Canada’s current strategic plan, including the healthy child and youth strategy, the brand strategy and the international strategy

I’m really grateful for all the support and encouragement, and hope that you’ll continue to comment on my blog, send me their feedback via e-mail and stay in touch by telephone.  I’m looking forward to talking with many of you in March during my travels to Associations and regional meetings.

You’ve been telling me that the pace of change has to be slow enough to engage and involve, and fast enough to demonstrate what is possible.  By pacing ourselves this way, we’ll be able to work together effectively over the long haul – not only for 100 days.

On another note, what has been the most memorable Olympic moment for you so far?

Good use of these new methods of communication, Scott. I remain hopeful that it catches on with others in our organization.

My most memorable Olympic moment thus far is Alexandre Bilodeau’s victory in the moguls event, and his brother Frederick’s wonderful response – great photo on the cover of this week’s MacLeans magazine.

Scott, on behalf of the National Board I want to thank you and all your staff for the incredible effort that has been expended in your first 50 days to make the YMCA in Canada increase it’s already significant impact. We are most pleased that the Case for Change has been unanimously accepted by the leaders of all our YMCAs.

As for my most memorable Olympic moment, I am waiting until 1:00 pm PST today when Clara Hughes will skate the Women’s 5000, and hopefully that will be it.

    Hey Marty and Bryan,

Thanks for your comments. I do think we are picking up momentum on our change process and I think these new approaches to ongoing communications are quite effective. While it may take a while, we are using a variety of channels to keep folks up to date.

I think my most memorable moment to date has been the “beer walk in Whistler” by John Montgomery. Wasn’t yesterday a great day for Canada? Our friend Clara really came through (and she’s closer to our age than her competitor’s age!).

Starting to make the Case of Change with our board – the light is going on and we’re excited in Kingston.

My favourite moment was watching my Ilderton neighbours who skated and played hockey with my kids win Gold. Congrats, Scott and Tessa!

That’s great news, Mary. We’re going to try to get you some helpful materials on March 19 to really cement things with your Board prior to the AGM.

I didn’t know you were from Ilderton (in fact, before these Olympics, I didn’t know anyone was from Ilderton!).

My favorite Olympic story is from the Para-Olympics –and it is the story of the understated woman, engineer who quietly won 5 gold medals –we need to find a way for her to be part of our YMCA!

A very impressive first 50 days – very exciting !!

    Hi George,

I’m afraid that I didn’t see the paralympics at all but I’m out in Vancouver to meet with the BC MRC and to assist the Vancouver YMCA CEO Search Committee and had someone here share this as their favourite Olympic moment as well. We’re trying to get a number of “great Canadians” to participate in our AGM this year and this woman may be an ideal candidate!
